I’m from the US, so I am not fully aware of the ramifications in these actions, but I am well aware that it could cause real issues economically for the UK, the EU, and globally. I certainly hope this all works out for you guys, as I’m aware not everything was peachy before this, and it could get much worse as a result.
The pound has fallen 10% against the dollar, which is the lowest since 1985. A 1% change is unusual, 10% is unheard of, especially in the space of a few hours.
S&P (a global credit agency) say that the UK is likely to lose its AAA credit rating. This basically is an indicator of economic health, so downgrading it is not a good sign. It could level off in a few days, but it could trigger an economic crisis.
The UK’s stock market opens at 8AM, but it’s probably not going to be good.
Yeah, I heard that on Sky News. Been watching it online for the last few hours and been real interested because of the issues this can cause for you folks, and the rest of the globe.
Here’s a graph of the change in value of the pound since 1971. See if you can spot the EU referendum:
So the european stock markets have opened. In one word: bad. It’s very bad. Some shares are down by a third, some up to 70%. Not all of the shares have opened yet, but £120billion has already been lost off the FTSE.
All you need to know:
We have fucked over Greece, Portugal and countries that needed the EU to prevent bankruptcy
It takes 2 years to leave so hold your horses
No-one really knows how this is gonna pan out
Young people (who will be affected) did not vote for this
Congratulations Britain you done fucked up big time.
This is why I’m moving back to Australia ASAP.
This referendum has been a perfect example on how not to do a referendum:
[ul][li]Both sides said the nation will descend into fire and brimstone if they don’t get their way[/li]
[li]Both sides were lying through their teeth[/li]
[li]Both sides were lead by fairly unpopular people[/li]
[li]Most people still don’t know what the EU actually does[/li]
[li]Nigel Farage (who was not the leader of the Leave campaign, but seems to think he was) has already said that one promise (all £350mil of the EU budget going to the National Health Service) is impossible[/li][/ul]
And now the United Kingdom is becoming the United Kingdom.
Nicola Sturgeon (the First Minister of Scotland*) is calling for another independence referendum as Scotland votes 62% remain. The reason for this is because during the first, one of the pro-stay-in-UK arguments was access to the EU, which people liked the idea of.
There are renewed calls for Northern Ireland (part of the UK) to be reintegrated with the Republic of Ireland (a separate country).
Gibraltar, a small piece of UK land which borders Spain and the sea, voted 95.9% remain. Free movement with Spain is essential for them because Gibraltar is 2.6 square miles. The Spanish government has already proposed joint-control.
- Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own parliament and leader which can pass local laws. Nation-wide laws are still passed by Westminster.
“UK is Officially Leaving the EU”
Maybe someone should move this to the centralised absence thread XD I’m out of here guys I hate everything.
NOW INTRODUCING
MARCO’S SHED!
For all those who are sick and tired of politics, and believe the EU Referendum is the turning point in Britain’s downfall, move into this delightful shed in the Netherlands!
It’s fully equipped with bunk beds, disco balls and condoms. And the best part? You’ll be living with everyone’s favourite OP, Marco!
100% real not faked by me list of top searches on the UK gov’s website:
Because of the UK voting to leave. nicole surgeon (snp leader) has called for a 2nd referendum for independence of Scotland. Northen Ireland leader has also called for a referendum. This is not good.
Everyone at my school is raging because of the Old/Young divide…
18-24 - 64% Remain - 24% Leave
65+ - 33% Remain - 58% Leave
our local news says that David Cameron has resigned. reminds me of when the Canadian election happened, conservative leader Stephan Harper resigned.
What sucks about that too, is that Cameron seemed to be a half-decent PM for you guys, and a lot of the Leave party leaders wanted him to stay because of that. Hopefully when your leadership changes hands, it falls into competent ones.
For now, things are looking bleak but who knows, things may get better soon.
Judging by all the turmoil, the sun may set on the British Empire soon enough, but hopefully that isnt the case.
(although a united Ireland would be pretty awesome)
Best of luck to anyone effected.
It’ll be okay, just refer to other nations in Europe who aren’t part of the EU who get on just fine, such as Norway, Switzerland etc.
As a Politics student myself who lives in the UK and studies the EU in depth, we will be fine.
As what always happens, the pound will increase again, it won’t stay that low.
We will continue to trade with Europe and make more trade deals with other nations.
Immigration-wise we will simply extend our immigration system we’ve applied to non EU’s to the EU. I don’t hear a lot of stick for immigration policy from other nations such as Canadas, Australias or other nations who aren’t in the EU.
I could write out a hell of an amount of reasons why Brits will be just fine, but I am exhausted XD
(I must admit though I’m not pleased with the prospects of the new Conservative MP )
David for PM!
I shall put it simple:
By voting to leave the European Union, they have not only fucked up their country, but also their currency, real-estate, tourists, and The Queen. In summary of my summary, the UK is fucked up right now, unless they get their shit together, REALLY fast.
Have a nice day!
