UPDATE | Project Apollo (Creative2, X 7574, Z -3505)

IMPORTANT UPDATE 09/06/2015>>> Project Apollo has now moved to Creative2 (located approximately X 7574, Z -3505). Whilst the server was down this morning I did some rough maths and came to the conclusion that I would like the project completed before the hypothetical decay of the proton and the heat death of the universe. Whilst I would have preferred to have had to make all the tools and gather the resources, it is simply not achievable on a realistic time-scale. Hopefully, with more players in general using the creative server, the finished city will be visited and appreciated more often so there is a silver lining to this.

Greetings,

I have started work on a new project and am just taking the time to outline the plan and to describe what is involved if anyone wishes to help.

There isn’t a particular purpose behind the project other than that when finished, it will look pretty f***ing immense. What I want to build is futuristic looking, Mayan inspired walled city, the centre piece being a colossal stone pyramid. It will by 127 blocks wide at the base and be 64 blocks high from ground level to the summit. If this wasn’t huge enough it will also be hollow, and the interior will also descend downwards 64 blocks in a stepped fashion mirroring the structure above. The lower half will be illuminated by lava channels clad with glass and the upper half will be illuminated by torches and skylight channels also formed of glass. At the widest point (layer 64, so at ground level but half way up the structure where the structure is at its widest (see diagram)) the entire floor will be clad with glass allowing players to walk across the pyramid shaped chasm below. There will also be other structures and facilities installed within and around the structure to create a kind of town/city feeling but at present these have not been designed but will be constructed as and when necessary. Housing is on the agenda but I need to work out how to allocate the space.

The image above is a rough crossectional view of the structure. It does not show internal structures such as the lava channels but it gives you a sense of the size and shape of the thing.

The construction will take place in three distinct phases. Phase 1 covers the construction of the Lower Structure. Phase 2 will cover the construction of the Upper Structure and Phase 3 will involve the construction of any required interior structures such as the glass floor/summit room/variors chambers and rooms etc etc.

The construction schedule will go something a little like this:

P1.1 Excavate lower structure (Approximately 300,000 blocks taking into account existing cave systems). Use torches to illuminate if needed. Use stone to fill in gaps caused by caves/lava lakes.
P1.2 Dig all 60 lava channels (3 blocks deeper than the surrounding step level. Diagram coming soon!)
P1.3 Replace all visible none-Stone blocks with Stone.
P1.4 Clad lava channels with Cyan Glass (leaving top layer to allow insertion of lava source).
P1.5 Place lava source at top of each lava channel and clad with glass. Check all channels are functioning properly.
P1.6 Remove torches previously used to illuminate the inside of the construction site.

P2.1 Use stone and cyan glass to construct the Upper Structure. Use evenly spaced torches to illuminate if needed. Dirt can be used as scaffold to add each step.
P2.2 Remove any dirt used as scaffold.

P3.1 Install steps in both Lower/Upper Structures
P3.2 Install cyan glass floor at layer 64.
P3.3 Install other required rooms/chambers
P3.4 Build surrounding structures (and city wall?) etc.
P3.5 Host the opening ceremony.

This schedule is of course quite simplified. I’m sure certain parts can be constructed simultaneously or in different orders but this is the most logical order to do things.

At the present time, P.1.1 has begun but will inevitably take the longest amount of time so for now, all that is needed if anyone wishes to help right now is seemingly endless mining and digging. If you have the spare time and and want to help then /msg me or /tp to me in game and i’ll show you the ropes.

I hope this post gives you an rough idea what Project Apollo will involve, and I will post updates soon regarding progress and important milestones reached during the project.

Many Thanks,

Damn, sounds nice!

The planning for this is immense, you took some serious time doing this! Good luck with it

Thanks  In a previous server I started working on something very similar but didn’t complete it and the server was shut down. My main concern is how long it will take to excavate the interior which is why I am hoping to get help. I’ve set out the boundary line for layer 64 so if anyone wants to help dig just turn up and start digging inside of the giant stone square. It is very tedious work so I don’t expect people to want to help for very long but when it’s finished it will be pretty cool knowing it was built by hand with tools you’ve had to craft yourself, hence why I’m not doing it in creative mode.

I can post picture updates as I complete each stage of the project if anyone is interested?

Sure, I’d like to see 'em. I’m leaving Wednesday, so I’ll only be on the forums anyway.

Sure those coords are correct? I went to them and there is nothing at all, just a forest.

Apologies and thank you for your interest. I may have added a minus by mistake. Following a major update however the project has now been moved onto the creative2 server, the new and correct co-ordinates are in the title of this thread.

Progress Report #1 - 09/June/2015

So the project has officially begun, on the Creative server, where I now stand a chance of seeing this thing completed within my life time.

  1. My first task was to find a suitable location for the site. I found a large flat(ish) desert area in the far south east and proceeded to mark out where the four corners of the pyramid could be located. Then, taking into account that I want to build a city wall and structures surrounding the pyramid, I had to shuffle the markers around slightly so to give myself enough room on all sides of the pyramid and to avoid overlapping with a river and a mountainous area near the site.

  2. With the base at Y64 now marked out, I then located the centre point (see image above) and proceeded to dig down to Y2 (I havn’t gone to Y0 or Y1 because I eventually want to install underfloor lighting). From here I could then excavate upwards the four corners of the lower structure. The image below depicts an example of one completed corner as viewed from Y13 up to Y64. With each of the corner shafts completed, it would now be possible to mine the rest of the interior without having to worry about digging beyond the boundary of the structure. You can just pick a layer and mine in a straight line towards an adjacent corner.

  3. The first few layers near to the centre point at Y2 didn’t take long at all. Already though you can start to understand how much longer it takes to excavate each ascending layer. Whilst Y3=1 block to remove, Y4=9 blocks to remove, Y5=25 blocks to remove and Y6=49 blocks to remove, you can do the maths:
[tt]where ‘Yn’ equals the Y value (((Yn-2)+(Yn-1))^2) = the number of blocks to be removed per given layer[/tt]
and calculate that by Y30 for example, you are going to have to excavate 3,249 blocks, and that’s only about half way up. By the time you reach Y60 there are 13,689 blocks that need to be removed. Why am I doing this!?

  4. Fortunately whilst excavating I have discovered a huge cavern and a disused mine. As each block of air is one less block I have to mine it means these natural structures will save me a fair few hours in dig time, which is fantastic.

  1. Where caverns intersect the structure, I have to fill in the gaps with stone and, just in case any unwary miners (or my careless self) stumble upon the newly constructed stonework, I have placed signs in a half arsed futile attempt to prevent damage to the structure.

  1. So far I have excavated up to Y20, approximately ~9000 blocks which, with plenty of distractions only took a few hours. The next task is simply more of the same. The tedium is only beginning to show but I’m sure it will only get worse so I will need to take regular breaks from this project otherwise I will go insane. Here’s a wide angle view of the progress so far as seen looking up from Y2.

Damn, keep making posts like this! Nice!
