Laptops for dummies

Hello all!

As some may know my laptop which is just over a 1 years old broke a few days ago meaning I need a new one to purchase.

However, as I’m off to university this September I an reaching out to all uni students on what you would recommend to purchase for the duration of 3 years.

I have a budget of around £900 and Some requirements including:

  • great for making notes and other forms of writing/revision

  • Sleek and not chunky (not thick and heavy).

  • Enough memory and storage for university work and games to play smoothly such as minecraft (clearly) and EU4.

Other than this, what advice do you have for new undergraduates such as myself?

Thanks!

What are you studying?

I’d say just about anything can handle EU4 and minecraft, especially at that price point. For a university laptop I would say the features you want to look for are weight and battery life, and then performance, because lets face it playing games is nice but at the end of the day what really matters for a school laptop is browsing the web and working with microsoft office.

Some recommended specs, ingest with salt grains:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5+ or AMD Ryzen 3+ (Quad-core)

  • RAM: 8GB+ (Chrome is hungry these days)

  • Storage: Depends on your use habits, but a 500GB SSD (Solid state for speed) was sufficient for me.

  • Battery: You want to be able to go all day, look for laptops with 56Wh+ batteries. For example my lenovo thinkpad has an internal 32Wh and a detachable 72Wh, which can go for 8hrs on a workload.

I have a 900 euro gaming laptop and it pretty much can run anything from minecraft to assassin’s creed origins. I have 8gb RAM, 1TB SSD and 250GB HDD, i5 7th Gen processor and gtx1050 asus laptop

Hope it helps
