Alright peoples, it seems with all the new and old rule breakers, im sure you are sick and tired of banning and giving second chances and such like that. (Trust me. High tier admin on a TF2 server. Not as easy as you may think.)
Is there anyway that players actually have to read the rules in order to play? On the server I administrate, there is a pop up on the side of the screen that has the 3 basic rules down. Is there anyway you could make a test where new players and past banned players have to read the rules and take a test on it?
Let me explain why i am asking.
Ive read most and pretty much all the ban appeals on PCB. Most are, “I didnt know”, “I didnt read the rules”, ect. You can verify that right? Well my personal experience on Minecraft servers are low on this, my TF2 experience has skyrocketed. Ive banned 200+ players a week and kick about 10 times that. In about 5 weeks, Ive gotten more strict and its been more bans because of the shear stupidity of the players. Ive been called names, ive been called a hacker, heck ive even been reported to the steam administrators for doing my job. (Steam admins didnt do diddly squat.) The #1 reason they all have been banned is because they didnt read the rules. I even send out a server message 3-4 times an hour telling people to read the rules and they simply don’t. They complain that I have not said anything about the rules. I tell them “fine, read the rules, break them, get banned.” Believe it or not they still break them. (Genius!!)
So after that little story, is there any plugin that makes the players take a test after reading the rules?
If I got onto a server for a quick look around I’d want to get straight onto it, not take tests. If you’ve been on other servers the rules are pretty much the same wherever you go (with exceptions for specific gamemode servers like spleef, hunger games etc.). If I thought I knew the rules I’d just skim read them and be done with it, wouldn’t fancy having to do a test after that really.
On the other hand, if you know the rules the test would be easy. I can just see this causing complains, or guests not knowing what to do - either pestering us or leaving.
i am staff on a server with a new feature, at our spawn there are no signs but every player has a book stating all the rules and the way the server works etc etc. this book will stay in their inventory (forced by plugins) it doesnt really force people to read the rules but its a pretty helpful thing
Now that’s a bit better Meta. Still, member is supposed to be automatic for joining the forums. If anything, it would be the jump to trusted that might need it. But then that process is so slow, they should already know everything. Grr. I don’t know. I think our earlier idea for a hidden button to get out of adventure mode was clever.
Having joined many servers that require you to pick a door for many floors I get bored fast. I would just like to say we are walking a tightrope on this. Perhaps we add a rank between member and trusted similar to what kyle said? They could get certain commands (tbd) that make it worth it to read the rules and be able to answer questions in the chat bar.
I like that idea matty, but I know people don’t even read those books either. I used to play a server which was based on the idea of Age of Empires, and everyone got a book that stayed in their inventory that outlined the rules, how to play, the buildings, the uses of things etc. But the number of people who would never read it and ask stupid questions in chat =/
