[size=12pt]When a guest joined, we automatically want to say: “Welcome!” or “Welcome to PCB.” We later follow this simple sentence by saying “Sign up here:iefwinwiwn!” But is this really what we want to convey on PCB? Just hi sign up mate. While saying welcome is a nice thing, maybe we should say Welcome, and then follow it with “what are your interests?”
What’s your favorite minecraft activity? Maybe ask them once you have had a nice conversation if they would like to sign up. It sounds like we are desperate for new faces (well we kind of are). Also say Welcome {playername}. People liked to be addressed by there name, it makes them feel like you are doing more then just greeting them. You have a small connection which is more important then a simple welcome. Make sure to invite them to your town to build and make conversation. Explain that member is free, and adds /tpa /warp, some extra cash, and more. For some reason people seem to have a hard time finding the big SIGN UP HERE button. So I control click that and copy the link. This gives a direct link so they don’t have to search through the pages.
I mean I don’t typically get people to Sign Up as they first join because then it looks like we’re one of those servers that collect money in order to even become ranked. Instead I just say, as a Staff, that if they need help to let me know and if they have questions about the server to approach me. Otherwise I give them about 5-15 minutes to explore and involve themselves in chat before I either recommend signing up if they like the server, or if they ask about it.
Also keep in mind that if Guides are online it is their duty to provide information to Guests and Members that are new community. It’s great that you’d like to be helpful and be friendly with guests, but remember, when it comes down to them asking questions and a Staff member or Guide is actively involving themselves to help don’t jump in and help. We don’t want to be confusing guests on information, especially if they’re unfamiliar with what the chain of ranks is.
So just so we’re on the same page: By all means you are encouraged to help newer players if a Staff member or Guide is AFK, busy with tasks, or just not helping. However, when they are feeding information let it be up to them to continue doing so. And yes, do treat newer members to human and don’t act like a robot when they first join! You’d be surprised how many people end up disconnecting when they feel like they’re talking to robots haha. I’ve joined servers where it was actually like that. Needless to say I don’t play on them!
When new people join, say welcome then ask “if you need any help feel free to ask our guides!” (If any guides are online) if no staff or guides are online just say “if you need any help feel free to ask us!”. You should give them 5-10 minutes to actually look around. If they don’t like the aspect of our server, they’ll leave.
About about 10 minutes or so later ask them if they would like to sign up. Don’t rush all the information in their face. If they say yes, send them the link to sign up. If they don’t answer, don’t rush them. We want new players to feel comfortable in our community. If they need help signing up, leave it to the guides. That’s what they’re for.
Ps, this is just my personal opinion on what people should do to help people. If you don’t like how I would help a new player, feel free to do it your own way!
If you want to do that, go ahead. I don’t like to ask them a bunch of questions upon arrival, as they might have their own. Of course, I’m going to tell them to sign up as they’ll have access to more things. It’s a nice idea, but I don’t think we need everyone doing it lol. Obviously, it’s free speech, so do what you want, but that’s just my two cents It’s totally nice if you and others want to as well.
Thank you. I understand if everyone wants to help, but I was selected to be guide for a reason. I’m here to help, not only because it is my duty, but because I want to. Obviously, you can welcome guests, but if everyone floods chat trying to help them, it kind of drives me insane trying to help. Nothing against helpful people, but I’m here to do my job, and it is very bothersome and difficult if half the server is trying to do it for me. Obviously there are exceptions, like if I’m super busy, or AFK, but for the most part, you should let guides be guides.
I’ve been on when new people have joined and loads of the members have been like “welcome. hey, [playername] sign up to build [playername]sign up to build” and they just keep harrassing them then they’re like I CAN’T TAKE IT!! disconnects
Just let the guides do their job! If they’re not on, let staff do it or trusteds!!
I would like to make the opposite case. I think that if there’s a member who wants to help them, they would make the better introduction.
Members are closest to Guests so they were guests last
Members and trusted are most likely to need help. Staff have worldedit/too complicated builds.
Members are the simplest rank, If we shower them with ranks, they will get confused, and they might think the server “looks like we’re one of those servers that collect money in order to even become ranked.”
I first joined PCB in late June, 2015. I kept leaving and coming on, because even though staff were answering my questions, I felt outside of the community, and still wasn’t 100% sure of what we do, and I didn’t want to ask the staff members millions of questions.
I kept trying to get into PCB, because I knew Asmo in real life, but I still felt outside of the community.
Really not knowing what to do I started asking the question “Does anyone need any help”. It was finally answered by [member]Jumpa_Jumpa, and I started helping him build Axiom Town Hall, and only then, did I feel inside the community.
So I think that if a member can, and wants to help, they should do that before we shower them with ranks.
One thing I’ve noticed is that someone will ask how to build in creative, and then 6 or 7 people will all tell them to go sign up to the website with a variety of links which may or may not be clickable depending on their rank. It’s nice that you all want to help, but it’s overwhelming for a newcomer.
If a guide is online, let them deal with it That’s the whole reason the rank exists. If they’re afk or none are online, then ONE person tell them they need to sign up and then give the link. Ideally this person should be trusted+ so the link is clickable.
I’ve seen it happen a few times where the person ends up just as confused by everyone telling them where to sign up as they were before asking. They usually then just quit.
tl;dr Pls don’t overwhelm the guests pls. 1 person is enough.
Yeah, I saw this happen several times last night (or the night before it?) and it made me feel a little pis*ed with everyone just doing that even though @koalamama told them not to at least three times…
The only problem with this is that the members can’t type links in the chat so they end up confusing the guest with links that don’t have the dots in! Just let the guides do their job!
I have made up a way that may solve the problem; Let the highest ranking person on the server at the time tell the person how to sign up. (unless a guide is on) Then, if the highest rank is AFK or busy or something like that, let the second highest person do it and so on…
Also, people don’t know who that person is going to be that tells them how to sign up so everybody does it at once thinking that they are going to be the one to tell the guest.
This has seriously gone on too long, but here’s my £0.01404.
Say hi, make them feel welcome. If they have questions, answer them. Maybe five minutes down the line, ask them how they are. Use this as a way to tell them about registration. Don’t crowd them as well, if someone is already talking to them, there’s no need for you to do so as well.
Also, if a Guide is online, ALLOW THE GUIDE TO HANDLE IT. That is why they have the rank. If they are busy, or a Guide is not on, a Trusted member will do it. If Trusteds are unable to or not around, it moves on to the Members. Staff will take over if they want to.
