So as you all know my laptop is kaput and I have been given a budget of £200 to find a new one. Now I’m not very techy. I have no idea what to look for apart from it needs to have a decent graphics card and a big hard drive. It can be a used or new one. Any make but must be a laptop as my room is to small for a desktop pc.
Beat me to it!
Is 2.4 kg heavy for a laptop? I’m more of a desktop person myself so I wouldn’t really know. Personally I think the RAM might be a bit lacking and it has windows 8, which I am avoiding like the plague.
Thanks for the help I will bookmark the page. The scenario is if I don’t get a job it will most likely be a Christmas present but if I do get a job I will buy a better more expensive one.
All the specs are good except that CPU… 1.75 eh? My desktop from 7 years ago was a 2.2 (single core, but still). Most program still use just one core at a time, so a single fast CPU core will often do better than 2-4 slower ones.
4 gigs of ram should be more than fine for most. Also, though I don’t want Win 8 myself, you can re-enable the start menu for free with third party mods. I might like it if I could remove the metro screen they added.
If I get the job (I have an interview tomorrow and about 2 weeks until the Christmas temp jobs are all taken) my budget could be 500-600 or more. If thats the case I will ask for more suggestions
CPU is the most basic of basic almost. 4GB is fine. Windows you can actually remove the whole metro thing if you really want, in 8.1 (a free upgrade I believe, basically SP1 for Windows 8 I think…) they bring a start menu somewhat back.
I have a friend who has a $300 computer and absolutely hates it, it is worth saving up just a bit more to get something more usable.
UPDATE: Things are looking up for me. I will be doing 3 weeks work before Christmas which will guarantee me around 370 pounds. I have a possible work placement opportunity which will bring me more money in and I am selling various items on ebay. The budget could be considerably more!
In that case you would probably be better off getting a gaming laptop. That’s not really my area so I can’t really give any suggestions. Just make sure you get a laptop based on all of the specs rather than one. I bought a laptop mostly because it had an HD screen and it sucks .
I never buy stuff without asking first. Got a couple of mates who know a thing or two about comouters and you guys always give great advice so I know I will get the best laptop for the right price

Get a windows 7 Toshiba satellite. I use that and had it for well over a year and a few scratches on the surface (thanks loose nails and staples). Its been thrown on the ground and stepped on. I think its secretly a nokia…
