As many of you may or may not know, this Friday (6th June) is the 70th anniversary of the operation overlord/D-Day landings. A total of over 1 million allied troops landed by 4th July on the Normandy beaches to invade German-occupied France, and ultimately to push to Berlin. Over 10 thousand people died over the duration of the landings, and without them, the war would, could not, have been won. I therefore ask of everyone to take a moment to think of those who gave their lives to defend our nations against the Germans, and end the second world war, this Friday.
Wow that is truly amazing that so many have sacrificed their lives to defend their countries and end that war. Thank you for reminding us of this dordsor.
Without the Americans we would have lost the war, as the American soldiers more than doubled the numbers invading Normandy, and played a key role in the bombing ans shelling of the wall with their bombers and ships. However for the majority of the war, Britain was fighting by itself on the western front, but not forgetting the supplies the Americans sent over, losing many ships and men in the process, as they did not want to get wholly involved with the war, until the attack on Pearl Harbour.
Let us all just remember those who gave their lives to keep us free. Lets not argue as to who did what, people from many different counties contributed to other peoples freedom from a dictator. They gave their lives so that others might live and enjoy theirs.
“When you go home, tell them of us and say
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.”
John Maxwell Edmonds
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
I can tell you wrote this in a bad mood, and I would suggest not speaking about such topics when you are in a bad mood or you could end up seriously disrespecting someone.
well, I can tell who would rather have other people die in order to protect himself, and who would rather lose a war and have many more people die than fight to prevent it and perhaps die, and also who would wish to switch sides to whoever would win in a fight.
If we didn’t remember those that died, we would be disrespecting their sacrifice, and their families that had to come to terms with it, and also by remembering the suffering wars caused, we remind ourselves why we must avoid war at all costs, and always try to make a peaceful solution.
