computer probs! (somewhat just venting)

(Note I used my tablet to post this)
I figured it has been long enough that I haven’t been on and don’t know when I’ll be on again.

The computer I have been using as of late has not been mine. The computer my family had died last year October. My Father being cheap did not buy a new computer rather he brought home a computer from his office that was just collecting dust. Thus not really fixing the problem. He more of used a bandaid as the rest of my family calls it. We have been given 3 different computers to use basically over the past year. The "current" one just recently ran into problems. This caused my dad to take it to work to have it fixed by the I.T. departmentdepartment there. The computer has returned, but the .Minecraft file was gone along with all of its contents. The computer in its problematic state was unable to back up the files.

Basically I'm sick of my dad using his bandaid method to fix the computer and I don't have a job yet to be able to afford my own PC. I don't plan on using another computer that just temperaly fixes the problem that started almost a year ago. I don't know when I'll see you guys and gals again, but it was fun when I was on. I'll miss y'all. Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon and I'll reappear.

Is the issue that you dont like the appdata being deleted each time? Cause you can just make a ‘portable’ version of minecraft that runs all from a usb or something.

That way you wont lose your mods or such.

No not really. I did have a backup of the saves they were just old and outdated. I’m just tired of not having a computer that works constantly and doesn’t have a ton of application running in the background that “I’m not aloud to remove”

In all honesty, I doubt the computers you’ve had actually “died”. In the case that one of them malfunctions, acts up, etc, you can ask a good majority of PCB (including myself) what to do and we should be able to fix it remotely

:’( :’( :’( :’( :’( (by the way I was not being cheesy there) I am really sorry to hear this Jon. In fact I was waiting for you to get on to tell you that Nate has come back from the dead and is playing swtor. I was so exited to tell you but now you are gone. I am really really sad to see you go you were…my best friend.

Well on a lighter note you did not die so all is ok but I will miss you immensely and probably wont do a whole lot of swtor. I will be praying and hoping that you get everything resolved. Also I see u on oovoo a lot on your phone so I might msg. u on that. TTYL :-[

Psalm 121: 1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Just clarifying the other computers didn’t die the office just needed them back for misc reasons. this one is the only time I have run into problems of the files being erased due to a error that disallowed acssess to any of the accounts on the computer. This made it impossible to backup the files on my own as I couldn’t log onto any of the accounts.

So you got a virus then…

…OR, the workplace placed a lot of restrictions on THEIR computers. Those underprivileged accounts are nerfed so bad sometimes. It seems clear that they were not on an admin account.

What I don’t understand, is why you can’t just install MC again. Your account never changes. Same thing with Steam and any games you have with them.

The problem was that the single player saves were gone. I was just going to just refuse using the computer thus fodrcing him to finally replace the computer but I’ve come to the conclusion that it would be to difficult for me to not play MC. (On a side note my dad took the computer back into work and was able to retrieve the .Minecraft folder that had been deleted previously.)

Well, if it was just deleted, then there are ways you or others here could have retrieved it too. But that’s a real pain. Glad to see their tech guys could do so. I wonder how long it took em?

Advanced system care and two minuets of their time

For all major operating systems, you can use a tool like Dropbox along with some symlinks or hardlinks to direct Minecraft to place singleplayer saves into such a sync service. It’s really great for having your saves wherever you want them to.

If you use OS X or a Linux distro, check out the command line tool rsync - if you put it on a cronjob, you can schedule sync services back and forth between multiple computers (although the first approach I gave is a lot simpler).

My point here is, data in such an interconnected world we live in today is never inaccessible - just inconveniently accessible.
